Nutrition and Vitamins
It is possible that your doctor has already recommended you start taking a multivitamin. If he or she has, and you are following the Specific Carbohydrate Diet™ (SCD™), we recommend checking to make sure the ingredients in the vitamins are consistent with the allowed ingredients on the SCD™. Many vitamin supplements add sugar, yeast, starches, and other “illegal” ingredients as fillers.
There are currently a number of manufacturers with products that are safe for individuals following the SCD™. Freeda Vitamins, Kirkland Labs, and GI Pro Health are a few brands that have been making supplements specifically for the IBD community for a number of years. We also recommend the probiotics capsules shown below. We attempt to verify that the products we recommend do not conflict with the requirements of the SCD™.
While we recommend trying probiotics and Omega-3 supplements as part of a complete nutrition regimen to address IBD, not everyone will respond to them. Studies into the effectiveness of these products in IBD populations have been mixed. Some researchers have found significant benefits to probiotic and Omega-3 supplementation, while others have suggested that more data is needed before conclusions can be drawn. We recommend these supplements because they are considered safe and have other established health benefits, in addition to their purported benefits for IBD.
Please Note: Our recommendations are based solely on our independent assessment of the quality of the products. Please let us know if you come across additional SCD™ compliant supplements and we will gladly review them for possible inclusion on this website. Our Medical Advisors do not make recommendations regarding specific brands of nutritional supplements.
