In the February Journal of Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Emma Halmos and Peter Gibson discuss the evidence in support of diet’s impact on IBD. For readers who like to dive into the science, there is a lengthy discussion of various theories on how diet impacts the digestive system of individuals with both Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis.
The Specific Carbohydrate Diet and paleo diets are mentioned as two popular nutritional approaches to treatment. The publication, however, stops short of endorsing any one approach. Instead, the authors point out that these dietary approaches need additional study, and that diets that require significant modification to one’s diet require a more comprehensive understanding of the mechanism of action.
